PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a zinc alloy powder for use in an alkali battery that controls sharply generation of gaseous hydrogen, caused by self-discharge, which affects battery life, without the use of a zinc alloy powder in which accompanied special impurity is particularly lowered. SOLUTION: When the zinc alloy powder, in which by dissolving Al at first, and then In or Bi in turn as additional alloy components, the alloy component contains Al of 0.001-0.01%, In of 0.01-0.07%, Bi of 0.001-0.02% and Fe of more than 0.0001% not more than 0.001%, is used as a negative electrode active material, battery property is enhanced by controlling the generation of gaseous hydrogen. A given amount of the zinc alloy powder 1 is charged into a test tube 5, KOH solution 2 to 40% saturated with zinc oxide is added and then liquid paraffin 3 is filled. The test tube 5 sealed with a silicon rubber stopper 4 is held in a thermostat 6 at 60 deg.C and the volume of generation of gas can be seen by reading a scale of a pipet 7.
