PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the communication cost and communication time when downloading map information from a server to a plurality of map information output terminals arranged in adjacent areas. SOLUTION: This map information service system is equipped with (1) a server which manages map information; (2) a main map information output terminal, which is connected communicatably with the server via a public circuit and also has a map information storage for storing the map information received from the server and an output part for outputting the map information; and (3) at least one slave map information output terminal, which is provided in a position geographically adjacent to the main map information output terminal and where a private network including the main map output terminal is made, and which has an output part for outputting the map information acquired from the main map information output terminal via the private network; and this transmits the map information to the main map information output terminal via the public circuit from the server, and transmits the map information by the private network to the slave map information output terminal from the main map information output terminal.
