PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To configure a facsimile terminal so as not to significantly reduce a processing speed by taking steps to reduce a load if a plurality of encoding and decoding processes are parallelly performed. SOLUTION: A facsimile terminal is provided with a CPU 1 for selecting a JBIG encoding method or an encoding method whose compression efficiency is lower than that of the JBIG encoding method and compressing or expanding image data. When the CPU 1 starts encoding processing of read image data in the middle of JBIG decoding processing of received image data, a Huffman coding method whose compression efficiency is lower than that of the JBIG encoding method is selected to perform encoding processing of the read image data. In an encoding method whose compression efficiency is lower than that of the JBIG encoding method, any among an MH encoding method, an MR encoding method and an MMR encoding method is used.
