PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To read an image while shortening the waiting time and reducing the fluctuation of density in a sub-scanning direction when a light source whose light quantity fluctuates is used. SOLUTION: In the image reader having a black mark for reading the image by a plurality of CCD, control is performed to read a sub-scanning white reference by using the CCD capable of treading ahead in the sub-scanning direction. At a home position, the sub-scanning white reference is read by the CCD, which is not spread over the black mark, and dimming is performed by dimmer means. Then, reading can be started in a short time. During image read, these data are not used and after dimming back for several lines, the image is read again.
