PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems wherein a conventional vehicle detection system is expensive due to the use of a laser, an ultrasonic wave, a loop coil and the like separate from an image pickup device for reading characters on a license plate or the like, and sometimes mistakes a shadow 50 of a vehicle itself and a shadow of a building for a vehicle. SOLUTION: A contour line direction pattern feature variable of a vehicle front shape is stored in advance as a vehicle shape template. An image picked up by an image pickup device is subjected to edge enhancement processing, and a rectangular region is cut off. A contour line direction pattern feature variable in the cut rectangular region is extracted, and then compared and collated with the vehicle shape template, and if similarity between them both is equal to or larger than a constant threshold, vehicle recognition is made. |
