PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a multi-gradation picture display device that can display improved gradation disturbance for medium tone display caused when a moving picture is displayed and display a picture where a switching shock is not remarkable. SOLUTION: A signal shown in Figure 17 (d) is used for a coding switching signal. Since the border of the signal has a random shape according to the signal and an area intermingled with different coding methods of a still picture coding method and a moving picture coding method is formed at the switching border part, changes in temporal features of light emission in a PDP (Plasma display panel) are not arranged attended with the selection of a different coding so as to make the selection of the different coding unremarkable thereby smoothly switching the still picture coded part and the moving picture coding part.
