PURPOSE: A recording device and method of a digital video recorder are provided to record an event with vary fine picture quality using a plurality of cameras connected to the digital video recorder. CONSTITUTION: A recording device of a digital video recorder(100) includes a multiplexer(18), a CODEC(20), and a controller(22). The multiplexer multiplexes recording signals of a plurality of cameras(12,16) connected to the digital video recorder. The CODEC codes the multiplexed recording signal and decodes other coded signals. The controller controls the multiplexing operation of the multiplexer, and sets the coded recording signal provided by the CODEC to the maximum recording level when at least one event detector among a plurality of event detectors(10,14) placed surrounding the digital video recorder provides an event detection signal.
