PURPOSE: Provided is a novel process for the preparation of compounds of formula(1) and compounds of formula(2). It represents a significant advance over these previously employed methods via the use of water as a solvent. CONSTITUTION: A process for the preparation of compounds of formula(1), wherein R¬1 is (C1-C6) alkyl comprises the step of allowing a compound of formula (3) to react with a compound of formula(4), in the presence of water and a metal carbonate.
