The method has the following steps: measurement and recording of a representative expected behavior curve of a process variable measurement value (M) over time during at least one batch cycle; setting of a limit window (F) based on the expected behavior curve; continuous measurement of the variable over time during subsequent batch cycles to determine if the limit window is exceeded; and generation of a warning if the measurement value lies outside the expected range. The invention also relates to a corresponding measurement device with a microprocessor controlled measurement unit for implementation of the inventive method.
