The invention relates to a shoe brake assembly, in particular for rail vehicles. Said assembly comprises at least one brake shoe (8), which may be applied to a wheel (4) of a vehicle for generating a braking force, a suspension system (11, 12, 15, 18, 19, 21) for said brake shoe (8), which ma y be attached to a chassis, and an operating device for actuating the at least one brake shoe (8). According to the invention, said at least one brake shoe (8) may be applied to a surface (7) of the wheel, facing radially inwards, f or generating the braking force and may be actuated substantially outwards in t he radial direction. Said brake shoe (8) is arranged, such that a wheel tread ( 6) is not submitted to a braking force. Thus, existent irregularities on the wheel tread (6) do not disadvantageously influence the braking effect and corrugations on the wheel tread (6) are avoided.
