The procedure consists of using a set of instruments which are introduced in turn into the root canal to treat the crown area of the tooth first, then its median zone, and finally its apical area. Each instrument in the set comprises a tapering shank (1) with a spiral cutting edge along at least part of its length. The shank's angle of taper varies according to its position in the operating sequence. The angle is greater at the rear end of the shank for the first instruments in the sequence, and greater at the tip of the shank for those used at the end of the sequence. The number of instruments in the set is around five.
