<PICT:0886515/III/1> An apparatus for recovering potable water from brackish water comprises an evaporating vessel 1 to which brackish water is fed by a pipe 3, the level of water in the vessel 1 being maintained within predetermined limits and the water being heated by the introduction of hot gases below the water level; means are also provided for circulating water from a point below the water level to a point above it, and the apparatus also includes a separator in which steam is separated from entrained water, and a condenser. As shown, the means for heating the water comprises a submerged gas burner 5 having an elongated combustion chamber 6 connected to a transverse section 7 having openings 8, 9 through which the combustion products escape. Baffles 44 may be provided, to deflect the combustion products. Circulation of water in the vessel 1 is affected by a pump 17 which delivers water drawn from the bottom of the vessel to spraying nozzles arranged above the water level. Steam passes through a de-mister 20 to a centrifugal separator 22, which it enters tangentially through an inlet 23. Baffles in the vessel 22 assist the separation of entrained water, which is discharged through a pipe 31. Steam from the vessel 22 passes by a pipe 28 to a condenser which, as shown, is an air condenser comprising banks of fin tubes 34 and a chamber 37 through which air is circulated by a fan 38. Condensate is withdrawn through pipe 35.
