<p>The invention concerns a method for identifying and authorising locking or starting a motor vehicle comprising a hands-free access system including a central unit (C) exchanging identification messages in accordance with a communication procedure with other identification units (B1, B2, B3). The method comprises: a step which consists in emitting an identification message (CH) from the central unit (C) to the identification units (B1, B2, B3); a step which consists in emitting a message signalling the presence (ANTI) of the identification units (B1, B2, B3) having received and recognised the identification message (CH) to the central unit (C); a step which consists in sending a selection message (SEL) by the central unit (C) to select one particular identification unit (B3) to reply to the identification message. The invention is characterised in that it comprises a step which consists in sending an additional identification message (CH2), and the step which consists in sending a presence signalling message (ANTI) and/or the step which consists in sending a selection message (SEL) is carried out between the step which consists in sending the identification message (CH) and the step which consists in sending an additional identification message (CH2) so as to enhance security of exchange between the central unit (C) and the identification units.
