A water filter module has a rectangular housing around a chamber with a capillary filter separating the unfiltered side from a filtrate side. The housing has two inlets (17) on one side and two outlets (18) on the other side, corresponding exactly to identical interfacing filter modules. A number of filter modules are assembled in series to form a single filter battery without external fittings. Each modular cell has a back-flush tube inlet (20).
