PURPOSE: A device for detecting power supply failure of an optical transmission system is provided to install detection units detecting failure of power supply through waveform of an oscillator in each shelf, so as to correctly detect the failure of power supply in individual shelves regardless of signal influence of adjacent shelves. CONSTITUTION: Power circuit parts(3A-N) arranged in each shelf(1A-N) convert voltage of power applied from an external into supply voltage necessary for an internal function circuit part(2), and supply the converted voltage. Detected waveform providing parts(4A-N) connected to one end of the power circuit parts(3A-N) output waveform signals according to failure of power supply of the power circuit parts(3A-N). Detection circuits(6A-N) compare the detected waveform signals for the failure of power supply of corresponding shelves(1A-N) inputted from the detected waveform providing parts(4A-N) with a reference clock signal for decision, to output detection decision signals. A control processor(7) controls a protection function of normal shelves as well as a shelf in which power supply failure is generated, to prevent a system wrong operation according to the detection decision signals inputted from the detection circuits(6A-N). And a reference waveform providing part(8) generates the reference clock signal having waveform identical to the waveform provided by the detected waveform providing parts(4A-N).
