The invention relates to a skin-tightening mixture comprising: between 10 and 80 wt. % of a polysaccharide, preferably an alginate, having a molecular weight of less than 600,000 Daltons, advantageously less than 400,000 Daltons and, better still, less than 200,000 Daltons; between 15 and 75 wt. % of a polyhydroxylated agent selected from among sugars and the derivatives thereof, in particular sugar ethers and esters, preferably sorbitol; between 3 and 15 wt. % of polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinylpyrrolidone; between 0 and 25 wt. % of cellulose or a cellulose derivative, such as carboxymethylcellulose or hydroxymethylcellulose. The invention also relates to cosmetic compositions containing said mixture. The aforementioned cosmetic compositions can be used for the progressive mechanical smoothing of the surface of the skin, said compositions being extremely comfortable to use and providing a good base for applying make-up.
