A skylight shaft (24) is coated with a highly reflective film (47) to maximize the amount of light transmitted from the top of the skylight to a room below the skylight. Surface irregularities (38) are formed in the shaft (24) or adhesive (48) that holds the film (47) onto the shaft (24) to diffuse the light and thereby prevent the formation of focal "hot spots" in the room below.
