In a process to regulate the level of dilute salts in a cooling or evaporating system, the number of drain cycles (AZ) is subtracted from the number of feed cycles (ZZ) to calculate the difference (B), and that fluid is drained until drained as long as the difference is greater than zero. The process regulates the level of dilute salts in a cooling or evaporating system with a liquid inlet (17) and a drain outlet (14) for blow-down demineralization. In the process, the level of liquid is maintained at a constant level in a cooling reservoir (12) by regulating the water in-flow. The volume of incoming water is measured by the generation and counting of impulses; a predetermined number of first impulses defines a feed cycle ZZ. Removal of fluid from the cooling water reservoir (12), measurement of the quantity removed by generation and counting the impulses which define drain cycle (AZ). The novelty is that the number of drain cycles (AZ) is subtracted from the number of feed cycles (ZZ), and that fluid is drained until drained as long as the difference is greater than zero. Also claimed is a commensurate assembly with a counter (32). If the difference is greater than 0, the drain valve (24) is opened. If the difference is 0 or less, the drain valve is closed. By this process the feed and drain cycles can overlap and a number of feed cycles may accumulate, to be subsequently worked off by drain cycles.
