PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for replacing hydraulic elevator main ropes, capable of easily and accurately establishing the required length of newly installed main ropes and of simultaneously replacing a plurality of main ropes. SOLUTION: The elongation amount of the existing main ropes 5A-5C and the size of adjustment at a simple rod 6B are determined, and the two ends of the ropes 5A-5C are marked as C and D on a cylinder 3. The ropes 5A-5C are disconnected on the side of the cylinder 3, and then connected to newly installed main ropes 9A-9C using a grip 13. The ropes 5A-5C are retrieved while the ropes 9A-9C are drawn out, and the latter's ends are fixed to the car 2. A sign is put on the ropes 9A-9C at the location facing a mark D, whereto the previously determined elongation amount of the ropes 5A-5C, the adjustment size, and the dimension of a socket 6A are added. The ropes 9A-9C are cut, and the cut ends are fixed to a cylinder bed 3A.
