PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new bistable nematic liquid crystal device. SOLUTION: This bistable nematic liquid crystal device includes holes 8 arrayed in an alignment layer 6 formed on at least one cell wall 2. The alignment layer 6 induces a substantially planar local aligment of liquid crystal molecules. Each of the holes 8 has such a shape and/or orientation to induce the liquid crystal directors adjacent to the holes to adopt two different tilt angles in substantially the same azimuth direction. As a result, two stable liquid crystalline molecule-arrayed states can exist after an adequate electric signal is applied between electrodes. |
