Scaler chip and display apparatus

A unified scaler chip (13) includes an output by which a controller (11) can determine whether horizontal and/or vertical synchronising signals are being output by a TMDS circuit (7) in the chip. A controller (11) of a display apparatus can use this output to control the switching of the display apparatus between operational and power saving modes.
