The mobile station e.g cellphone has a short range radio or IR link for connection to a computer. However the battery power supply of the portable station can be quickly exhausted if for example the short range link is left on when not required. To avoid this, the invention shifts the short range module to a power saving mode, depending on the state of the short range communication. The conditions for shifting may include, completion or non-completion of the set up of a short range connection, switching to a non-short range mode e.g. by the closure of the station housing, turning off of a display back light, which indicates no user input in a preset time, or no data being sent over the short range link in a predetermined time.
