PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a white display, a black display, a halftone display or other color display at a low cost by using a liquid crystal display element without using a color filter. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display element of a double cell system is formed by continuously arranging on on/off cell 2 controlling display brightness and a coloring cell 1 producing a display color with polarizing plates 3, 4 and 5 respectively interposed. In this case, the on/off cell 2 is constructed so as to control the display brightness for the purpose of carrying out the white display, the block display or the halftone display. The coloring element is composed of a liquid crystal material with dielectric anisotropy and constructed so as to vary its spectroscopic characteristics by controlling an applied voltage.
