PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having an improved emission luminance and a display device having a low power consumption and a high luminance using the organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element has a light-emitting layer containing both a fluorescent compound and a phosphorescent compound. The organic electroluminescent element is characterized in that the ratio (N/C) of the number of nitrogen atoms to the number of carbon atoms in the molecule of the fluorescent compound is >=0 and <=0.05 and the emission maximum wavelength obtained by the electroluminescence in a state of the fluorescent compound converted into the element is a longer wavelength than the fluorescence maximum wavelength of the fluorescent compound.
