PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenylpyridine derivative usable for prophylaxis and treatment of respiratory diseases associated with phosphodiesterase 4, especially bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive lung diseases, etc. SOLUTION: This phenylpyridine derivative or its salt respectively has a phenyl group which may be substituted with an alkoxy group, etc., in the 6-position and an N-substituted carbamoyl group or a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring-carbonyl group bound with nitrogen atom in the 2-position. Furthermore, the phenylpyridine derivative or its salt has a potent and selective inhibitory activity on the phosphodiesterase 4 and is pharmaceutically useful.
