PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for advantageously producing a sulfonyl compound useful as a developer used in a heat-sensitive pressure-sensitive recording material, a raw material for chemical industry, an intermediate for medicines and agrochemicals, and a plasticizer or a modifier. SOLUTION: This method for producing the sulfonyl compound represented by the following general formula (I) (wherein, R<1> denotes hydrogen atom or an alkyl group; R<2> to R<6> denote each independently hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or an alkyl group and R<2> to R<6> may be the same or different groups; and n denotes 1 or 2) is characterized as follows. A phenol compound represented by the following general formula (II) is reacted with a sulfonyl halide compound represented by the following general formula (III) (wherein, X denotes a halogen atom) in the presence of a polyphosphoric acid.
