PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection optical system of a thin type and a low cost which is simple in control of switching color light and is good in illumination efficiency. SOLUTION: The projection optical system for projecting the images of multiscreens consisting of a plurality of display panels to a screen provided with an illumination optical system having color separating means for separating the light from a light source to light of respective colors R, G and B, light transmission means for introducing any of the separated light of the respective colors R, G and G as illumination light to the respective display panels and color switching means for switching the light of the respective colors R, G and B introducing to the respective light transmission means and a projection optical system for projecting the projection light from the respective display panel at the multiscreens, is constituted so that the respective display panels switch the displays corresponding to the respective colors R, G and B described above in tune with switching of the light of the respective colors R, G and B.
