PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wavelength variable light source which has a ultra-high wavelength variable speed of about several picos seconds and is improved in stability and operability. SOLUTION: This wavelength variable light source has a light pulse generating section 1 which generates light pulses, an amplitude control section 2 which controls the amplitude of the light pulses by superposing control light on the light pulses generated in the light pulse generation section 1 and outputs the short light pulses and a light frequency conversion section 3 which makes the short light pulses outputted from the amplitude control section 2 incident on an optical nonlinear medium having the refractive index changing according to the electrolytic intensity of the incident light and converts the frequency of the short light pulses.
