PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an ink amount and its state securely and readily without adding a complicated process. SOLUTION: An optical detection element for detecting the ink amount and its state is arranged at a position corresponding to an ink channel where ink flows in a liquid ejection head. Detection of an ink residual amount, detection of a head temperature, detection of presence of a medium to be recorded, and detection of the medium width to be recorded or the like are conducted and controlled based on an output from the optical detection element. Furthermore, the element substrate for the head comprises an ejection energy generating element, a wiring electrode to be electrically connected to the ejection energy generating element and an optical element.
