PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sheet conveying device and an image reader which stabilize the conveyance of a document sheet with simple constitution. SOLUTION: A conveyance belt 210, a driving roller 208, and a driven roller 209 are so arranged that the conveyance belt 210 while suspended between the driving roller 208 and driven roller 209 is not in contact with the surface of a browsing glass 102. A press-contact means presses the conveyor belt 210 and then the conveyance belt 210 comes into slide contact with the surface of the browsing glass 102 only in a very small area including an image read area on the surface of the browsing glass 102.
