PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten time until the start of machining using a prescribed tool by carrying out the straight movement of the body of a tool rest and the pivotal rotation of a turret with one electric motor. SOLUTION: This turret tool rest is provided with the body 2 of tool rest provided linearly movably along a prescribed coordinate axis on a saddle 1 and the turret 3 pivotally supported on the body 2 of tool rest. There are provided one electric motor 4 provided on the body 2 of tool rest and used for both the straight movement of the body 2 of tool rest and the pivotal rotation of the turret 3; a ball threaded shaft 5 and a ball nut 7 provided between the saddle 1 and the body 2 of tool rest and used to linearly move the body 2 of tool rest by the driving force of the electric motor 4; a gear train 10 used to pivot the turret 3 by the driving force of the electric motor 4; and first to fourth spur gears 18, 19, 20 and 21 for transmitting the driving force of the electric motor 4 to the ball nut 7 or the gear train 10 selectively.
