A thermoplastic film comprises a coating layer on the surface layer of said film, the coating layer comprising a polymeric nanocomposite comprising a polymer wherein said polymer is any one or more of polyacrylonitrile copolymer, Nylon-6,10, Nylon 6,6, Nylon-6, MCD6, ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymers, ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers, polyesters grated with maleic anhydride, PVdC, aliphatic polyketones or liquid crystalline polymers, and particles having a thickness of between 3Å and 50Å and an aspect ratio of between 50 and 1000 of an intercalated clay, wherein said clay is intercalated with organic ammonium ions.
