PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a carbonization method which makes it possible to prevent the ashing and excessive heat loss of a carbon material not maintained in a constant state, such as flammable wastes, caused by igniting the carbon material in the un-dried state to form the largely heterogeneous distribution of the inner temperature of a carbonization furnace. SOLUTION: This carbonization method for self-burning the heated carbon material W is characterized by containing a process for discharging a gas in the carbonization furnace 12 from the carbonization furnace 12, heating the discharged gas, introducing the heated gas into the carbonization furnace 12 to heat the carbon material W with the introduced gas, and thus heating the carbon material W in an approximately oxygen-free state in the carbonization furnace 12 at least until reaching the ignition temperature of the carbon material W, and a process for charging combustion air into the carbonization furnace 12 to self-burn the carbon material W in the carbonization furnace 12, thus carbonizing the carbon material.
