PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a misfire detecting device for internal combustion engine capable of accurately detecting misfire occurring in the engine even when starting operations are repeated because the engine does not get to firing. SOLUTION: A starter starts cranking the on-vehicle engine when an ignition switch is operated and a switch ST is turned on in starting of the on-vehicle engine. Explosion in a combustion chamber of the engine is started by this cranking and engine speed NE rises. When the engine speed NE gets to a boundary value NE2 or more, an electronic control device starts misfire detecting process and starts accumulation of misfire determination execution numbers and misfire counter. When the engine does not get to firing and stops after that, the accumulated misfire determination execution numbers and misfire counter are initialized at a point when a flag XSTEFI reflecting engine speed is turned off.
