PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starting assist device for a fuel injection pump, in which a sub-port is quickly opened as soon as an engine has been started. SOLUTION: In a conventional starting assist device for the fuel injection pump, a fuel injection timing is advanced and, at the same time, a fuel injection amount is increased. Since a temperature-sensitive member is used for opening and closing the sub-port in the conventional device, however, it takes a long time for the sub-port to open. The following arrangement is therefore provided. Specifically, there is provided a control piston 46, which is slidably fitted in a small clearance to a housing H and both ends of which communicate with a high-pressure fuel chamber 48 and a low- pressure fuel chamber 49, respectively. A control chamber case 47 is disposed on an end portion on the low-pressure side of the control piston 46. The control chamber case is slidably fitted in a small clearance in the control piston 46 and restricts the position of the control piston 46 in an axial direction with respect to the housing. A control chamber 50 formed between the control piston 46 and the control chamber case 47 is filled with fuel oil. As the control piston 46 makes a sliding motion in a direction of decreasing the volume of the control chamber 50, fuel oil gradually leaks out toward the side of the low-pressure fuel chamber 49 through the small clearance between the control piston 46 and the control chamber case 47.
