PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an open shield tunneling method which is available when open channel members are embedded in the ground, and can avoid deformation or breakage of the open channel members at the time of back-filling of the same. SOLUTION: According to the open shield tunneling method, a cycle comprised of a connecting step of connecting the open channel members of one unit together in an inner space of an open shield machine, and an advancing step of advancing the open shield machine according to the length of the open channel members of one unit, which are connected together in the connecting step, is carried out once or twice. Then, after completion of the cycle, a back-filling step of back-filling the open channel members arranged on the rear of the open shield machine which has advanced in the advancing step is carried out. In this manner by repeatedly carrying out the cycle once or twice and the back-filling step, the open channel members of the plurality of units are connected and buried. According to the method, at least one of the open channel members back-filled in the back-filling step, has a displacement restraining means on a side wall thereof, for restraining the side wall from being displaced at least by a predetermined amount toward the interior of the open channel member.
