PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new liquid crystalline compound having 1,2-propanediyl group, a liquid crystal composition containing the compound and a liquid crystal display device using the composition. SOLUTION: The new liquid crystalline compound having 1,2-propanediyl group represented by general formula (I), the nematic liquid crystal composition containing the compound and the liquid crystal display device using the composition are provided. The new liquid crystalline compound having 1,2-propanediyl group as a connecting group is extremely excellent in compatibility with the conventional general-purpose liquid crystalline compound or composition and has an effect of loweringΔn by addition to a mother liquid crystal and is colorless and chemically stable. Consequently, the liquid crystal composition containing the new liquid crystalline compound is extremely useful as a practical liquid crystal, particularly for liquid crystal displays requiring smallΔn.
