PURPOSE: A rotor and a rotor core and a method for assembling a winding assembly and a rotor core are provided to support a superconducting field winding assembly in a synchronous machine. CONSTITUTION: A rotor in a synchronous machine comprises a superconducting field winding assembly(33) having a coil winding(34) and at least one winding support(35) extending between opposite sides of the winding, and a rotor core formed of a plurality of rotor core sections(42), each of the core sections having a slot to receive the winding support. The plurality of rotor core sections are axially aligned with an axis of the rotor core.
