PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce energy consumption required for warming up for color image by turning off warm-up control for color image reading by a user who does not require color image reading, and to prolong the service life of a fluorescent lamp by omitting turn-on of the fluorescent lamp required for warming up for color image. SOLUTION: In the image reader in which the fluorescent lamp is used as a read light source, read of a black-and-white image is permitted after the end of warming up (fluorescent lamp turning-on) control for black-and-white image reading, and the warm-up control for color image is carried out, a means is provided for selecting OFF/ON of color warm-up and the user who does not require any color image, can omit the warm-up control for color image.
