The invention relates to a hydrometallurgical process for separating and recovering bismuth from the anode mud resulting from the electrolytic refining of lead. The bismuth from the anode mud is solubilized by treating with HCl, at a value of the liquid : solid ratio of 2...15 : 1, in the presence of an oxidation agent. The resulting solution is cooled with a view to separating lead and silver chlorides and neutralizing it up to a pH value of 0.8...2. The SbOCl is removed, then the bismuth is precipitated as BiOCl, by neutralization, up to a pH value of 3.3...5. The resulting precipitate is then subjected to a melting operation in order to obtain raw bismuth.
