PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically classify and totalize freely written questionnaires to output the result as quantitative data. SOLUTION: An information classifying and totalizing method is provided with an itemized retrieval knowledge 2 where a lot of items as the totalization object are preliminarily set and knowledge for retrieving information related to the items are preliminarily set by items, a document analysis means 3 which uses the itemized retrieval knowledge 2 to examine whether each of documents inputted to an information collection means 1 has information set to the items or not by items, a data totalizing means 4 which examines which item the document is concerned with on the basis of the analysis result of the document analysis means 3 and performs totalization by items in accordance with the examination result, a visualized data generation means 5 from totalized data, and a subject finding means 6 which finds a subject from the totalized data.
