SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR RECOGNIZING VEHICLE NUMBER PLATE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To assist tracking of a stolen vehicle and an illegal vehicle by detecting a vehicle the number plate of which is illegally replaced. SOLUTION: An on-vehicle machine registration number, a body number and a normal number plate number are stored in an on-vehicle machine 2 of a vehicle number plate recognition system consisting of an information collection center and the on-vehicle machine. A number plate 4 of a vehicle 1 is photographed with a camera 3 of the on-vehicle machine 2 and the number plate number is recognized. The number is compared with the stored registration number plate number and when they are different, they are transmitted to the information collection center. A data base is retrieved on the basis of the number plate number and the body number received from the on-vehicle machine in the information collection center. A police station is informed of number information of the vehicle using an illegal number from the information collection center and the information is utilized for the tracking of the vehicle of which a robbery report is submitted and the illegal vehicle by linking it with the existing number plate recognition system as well.
