The method relates to an alternative way of performing hand-off in a mobile communication system. The first step involves the mobile station (2) measuring the signal energies that it receives from all base stations (4A-4S) capable of communicating with the mobile station. Then, using more than one of the measured signal energies, a dynamic threshold value is computed. This dynamic threshold is used to compare with the signal level of a certain base station to determine if that base station can be selected for communication.
