PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To add a function for reading infrared light to a conventional color linear sensor without requiring excessive read time and without adding a light source for the infrared light. SOLUTION: On one sensor chip, three line sensors 20R, 20G and 20B are parallel provided for detecting three colors R, G and B for a color image read and further, parallel with these line sensors 20R, 20G and 20B, a fourth infrared light line sensor 20A having polarization sensitivity in infrared light is provided. Light emitted by a visible light source is reflected on an object such as an original, for example, this light is received by the line sensors 20R, 20G and 20B for R, G and B and the color image of the object is detected. In the fourth infrared light line sensor 20A, on the other hand, the color image can be detected by infrared light emitted from the object.
