The alloys for use as substitute for German silvers contain between 8 and 6% Mn and Zn % determined by the formula K - 2/3% Mn, where K is between 30.5 and 36.25; the alloy may also contain up to 3% Pb when improved machinability is required, e.g. for key blanks. Casting of the alloy is carried out below 1000 degrees C, and hot rolling below 850 degrees C. After cold rolling, annealing at a temp. between 400 degrees and 800 degrees C for 15 min. - 4 hrs. and cooling at a rate greater than 14 degrees C/hr. produces almost 100% alpha in the microstructure. Absence of Ni and the ability to hot work reduces the cost and improves the utility of these alloys.
|
