The operating method uses a set of functions (34-40) expressed in terms of the control energy (U) and the operating time (t) of the fuel injector piezoactuator, for different different piezoactuator strokes (h), for determining the required control energy for the piezoactuator for a given stroke. The employed function is selected from alternate functions corresponding to different load characteristics (L1,L2) in dependence on signals from sensors provided during the operation of the engine.
