Apparatus for sinking casing 16 in the earth comprises an auger 10 retractably mounted on a platform 13 adapted to be mounted on the casing, and drive means on the platform for the auger, in operation the weight of the apparatus forcing the casing into the hole drilled by the auger. The auger is retracted by means of a winch 21 and a wire 20 running through a mast 19, the winch motor being manually controlled, and also stopped by a trip mechanism operated by a spider 63 on the auger shaft 12 as the auger reaches retracted position. The auger is rotated by a rotary table 18 engaging the auger shaft, the table being driven by a motor 27 and a clutch and brake being incorporated in the drive. The platform is mounted on the concrete casing 16, the auger is rotated and lowered on to the ground, and the winch drive is disconnected so that the auger descends as the hole is formed. The auger is occasionally raised so that it may be cleared of earth by pivoting blades 71, 72 into the auger and moving them vertically whilst the auger is rotated. When the casing is fully located in the earth the bottom of the hole is cleaned up, and plugged with concrete. |
