Sulphonyl-imidazole derivatives of the formula in which R,R1, R2 and X are as defined in the description can be prepared by a new process by reacting imidazole derivatives of the formula with sulphonyl chlorides of the formula Cl-SO2-R (III)in the presence of an acid binder, of an organic diluent which is sparingly miscible with water and in the presence of water and a phase transfer catalyst.
