The method involves arranging the LED symbol (LED) in the main filament circuit (HK) with a sequential switch (K1) temporarily operable when the LED symbol is on. A supply circuit for a switch (K2) that switches a holding circuit and a secondary filament monitor (Rn) in the secondary filament circuit (NK) are switched on via the sequential switch. The second switch makes the monitor supply circuit, driven via a low impedance connection (R1), into a high impedance circuit when in its basic position, so that the monitor turns off but the switch remains held.
