The back rest has a backrest structure (1) with head restraint support structure (2) locked relative to it by an inertia-sensitive locking device (3). The device is unlocked when in normal use position, and blocks the support structure against pivot movement and forward pivoting of the head restraint during a frontal collision only. The locking device has a pendulum (3a) pivoted about an axis (3b) parallel to the horizontal pivot axis (1a) of the support structure, which engages on a counter surface (2a) of the structure.
